How to Stop Your Mac Ringing When Your iPhone Does

With the releases of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple has introduced cross-device functionality to make the transition from one device to another nearly seamless.

This means that apps can easily hand off items like Web pages, text messages, and files from an iOS device to your Mac and vice versa using Handoff. You can even reply to and answer iPhone text messages and phone calls via your Mac or iPad, even if the other person isn’t using iOS.

Amazing technology, for sure. But if you routinely use your Mac with your iPhone sitting on your desk, it can get annoying to have your Mac ringing along with your phone. Due to a slight delay between devices, this means your computer can keep ringing even after you answer your phone.

Luckily, it’s easy to turn this setting off, and below we’ve got the details on how to do just that.

Stop Phone Ringing on All Devices

First, let’s look at how to turn off ringing on all devices other than your iPhone. In other words, this makes phone calls work the same way they did before the iOS 8 and Yosemite updates. To get started, open Settings on your iPhone and tap on FaceTime.

The second toggle on the page should read iPhone Cellular Calls. Turn this OFF. Now no device connected to your account will ring when your phone does. This also limits the ability of your devices to make phone calls using your iPhone cellular connection.

If you would rather turn this feature off only for your Mac, you can do this, too.

Stop Phone Ringing on the Mac

Open FaceTime on your Mac and click on Preferences in the FaceTime menu. On the Settings tab, uncheck the iPhone Cellular Calls box.

This will turn off both incoming and outgoing calls from your Mac using your iPhone’s cellular connection.

Why Turn It Off

The cross-device functionality is great if you leave your iPhone in your bag or in another room away from your Mac. Ideally, being able to make calls from your Mac is a huge benefit, but it’s easy to see how having multiple devices all ringing at the same time can get annoying fast.

The feature is easy enough to turn on or off, so experiment with it and see what works best for you.
