Create Sticky Notes on the Fly in OS X

If you’re anything like me, at some point you’ve probably had Post-it Notes stuck all over your desk and computer monitor with reminders of things to do or phone numbers to call back later. Maybe you still do.

Nothing against Post-it Notes, but it’s time to join the 21st century. You can do the same thing on your Mac, without wasting paper.

I have since quit Post-it Notes and I use Stickies on my Mac instead. Anytime I come across text in an email or on the Web that I want to jot down, I create a Sticky Note.

Using Stickies is easy. Here are the steps to get you started.

Let’s go with the scenario that you find a website address, phone number or some other form of information on your screen that you need to make a reminder for.

Follow these steps:

  • Highlight the text in the document or website.
  • Press Shift + Command + Y. The following appears:

Let’s say I’m researching an article and I find a quote on the Web. I can simply highlight that quote and create a Sticky Note to use that quote at a later date.

Managing Stickies

Once Stickies is running, you can format the text and change the colors of the note cards.

Aside from using the keyboard shortcut mentioned above, you can also access Stickies from Spotlight by typing “stick” and choosing the correct application.

Changing the color of a Sticky Note is simple.

  • Once the Stickies app is open, select the Sticky Note and choose Color from the top menu.
